Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

What is a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) ?

A home sleep apnea test is an overnight study which monitors: breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and respiratory effort. It is used as a initial test in the diagnosis of Sleep Apnea. Our home sleep apnea test is done over the course of a single night, in the comfort of patients own homes and beds.

Patients suspecting or experiencing symptoms associated with complex sleep disorders (e.g. insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep-wake phase disorder) with no or minimal airway obstructions are advised to explore FFC’s Home Sleep EEG Monitoring offering.

Who would benefit from a HSAT?

Anyone who exhibits symptoms of or related to: excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep, waking during the night and gasping or choking, awakening in the morning with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headaches, trouble focusing during the day, mood changes (such as depression or being easily upset), & high blood pressure, should proceed with a Home Sleep Test.

What is the procedure for completing a Home Sleep Apena Test?

After an evaluatory consultationwith Dr Boesler, patients are provided with an overnight equipment rental. The test is done over the course of a single night and then returned to the office for interpretation the next or following day. If a test is not completed successfully than a repeat study may be conducted. A simple video guide is available below outlining equipment setup and study instructions.

Is the Home Sleep Apnea Test covered under my insurance?

Although each plan is different, most patients have been able to secure coverage for the HSAT. Patients are advised to confirm their own benefits prior to participating in a study. FFC’s submission rules still apply for this test and such out of network patients will receive a health insurance claim form to self submit for insurance coverage.

If the Home Sleep Apnea Test indicates that I have Sleep Apnea, what happens next?

Once a study has been completed, Patients personally discuss results and review treatment options with Dr. Boesler. If CPAP or BiPAP therapy is recommended, FFC submits necessary documentation to a third party Durable Medical Equipment (DME) distributor. The DME directly manages equipment insurance coverage, delivery, and sizing.

For new CPAP/BiPAP patients, a follow-up visit is recommended 2 weeks after equipment is received to ensure it is being used correctly. For established patients one visit every 6 months is sufficient for proof of medical necessity required for continued insurance coverage.
