Home Sleep EEG Monitoring

What is Home Sleep EEG Monitoring?

A sleep EEG is an overnight study recording the electrical activity of the brain during sleep. It provides detailed insight into patient sleep quality and efficiency (Learn more: Sleep Efficiency Equation). The Sleep EEG is used to diagnose sleep-wake disorders, such as insomnia, parasomnias, and circadian rhythm dysregulation. Fresh Fit Consulting has found extended application of the Sleep EEG to include: athletes or people with incentives to optimize their physical performance. Our Sleep EEG Monitoring is done throughout 1-2 nights, in the comfort of patients' own homes and beds. Two nights of data collection allows the study to normalize for nightly sleep variations.

Patients suspecting or experiencing symptoms associated with sleep apnea (e.g. episodes of nighttime stopped breathing, gasping, or choking, awakening in the morning with a dry mouth or sore throat, uncontrollable snoring) are advised to explore FFC’s Home Sleep Apnea Testing.

How does a Sleep EEG work?

Sleep EEG testing is an efficient, safe, & non-invasive method of analyzing brain activity during sleep. Sleep EEG’s create sleep waveforms detailing patterns and individual stages of sleep (Light Sleep, REM, and Deep Sleep). In recent years a host of portable monitoring devices have sprung up claiming to function as sleep monitors. The basic devices utilize less sensors limiting the depth of information gathered. Directly monitoring electrical brain activity is the only way to accurately discern individual sleep stages and measure true Deep Sleep.

What is Deep Sleep?

Deep Sleep is the third stage of our Sleep Cycle where our brain activity, breathing, and heartrate slow down considerably. If you’ve ever been woken up suddenly and couldn’t stake the feeling of groggy brain fog, you where most likely woken up from Deep Sleep.

Of all the different sleep stages, Deep Sleep is the most important for overall health quality, offering specific physical and mental health benefits. Hormones are released during Deep Sleep which build and repair muscles, heal injuries, and even regulate immune system function. Studies show Deep Sleep regulates glucose metabolism while also replenishing energy stores. Considering brain function, Deep Sleep impacts cognitive function and memory. During Deep Sleep our brains parse through everything we did and learned today and decides what to retain as long term memories.

Consecutive lack of Deep sleep directly leads to decreased quality of life and decreased life expectancy.

Who would benefit from a Sleep EEG?

While patients suspecting, or exhibiting symptoms associated with inadequate sleep (e.g. insomnia, restlessness, agitation, excessive sleepiness, cognitive decline, attention & mood disorders) have an immediate need to complete a Home Sleep EEG; FFC recommends this monitoring procedure to anyone who is curious about the quality and efficiency of their sleep. Insights drawn from the study serve as an excellent basis for performance minded individuals looking to optimize their sleep and daytime performance.

The Home Sleep EGG is not intended to diagnose or treat seizures. An attended in-laboratory study is required for patients experiencing seizures (fits) or blackouts. Fresh Fit Consulting is prepared to coordinate this process. Please contact us to learn more.

What is the procedure for completing Home Sleep EEG Monitoring?

After an evaluatory consultation with Dr Boesler, patients are provided with an overnight equipment rental. The test is done over the course of one or two night(s) and then returned to the office for interpretation the next or following day. If a test is not completed successfully than a repeat study may be conducted.

Is the Home Sleep EEG covered under my insurance?

Although each plan is different, most patients have been able to secure coverage for the Home Sleep EEG. Patients are advised to confirm their own benefits prior to participating in a study. FFC’s submission rules still apply for this test and such out of network patients will receive a health insurance claim form to self submit for insurance coverage.
